germは微生物の俗語的なものではと思います(専門用語ではmicrobe) 微生物という目には見えない生物が存在することを素朴な顕微鏡を通して実証したのはオランダのレーウエンフックですが、彼は医者でなかったこともあって微生物と病気の関係には全く考えが及ばウイーン大学産科のゼンメルバイスは手洗いを励行することによって産褥熱による産婦の死亡率を劇的に減少させたが微生物の関与を実証できずに悲劇的な最期を遂げた。イギリス外科医のリスターは手術野に殺菌剤を散布することによって手術後の化膿を大幅に減らすことができた。総括的に微生物（細菌）が感染症の原因になっていることを確証したのはドイツのコッホです。コッホとコッホの弟子によって細菌による感染症の病原体は発見されました。ただコッホの方法論ではウイルスは発見できず。これが遠因で野口英世が調査中に病原ウイルスに感染して死亡したことは有名です。結論的には消毒が感染症の予防に有効であることを示したのは産科医だったゼンメルバイスですが、感染症が微生物によって生じることを証明したのはリスターで、コッホが体系的な学問に仕上げたということになるのかなと思います。リスターやコッホは近代的な顕微鏡を利用できたのですが、ゼンメルバイスはそれができませんでした。ゼンメルバイスは故国に帰って臨床医として長く活躍しましたが、なぜ手洗いをすると産褥熱が予防できたのか説明できずに終わりました。。彼の名前がついた医科大学があります。つまり多くの人の功績によってgerm theoryが完成されたということになります。雑な記述ですみません。
