Fitch. 昨日（2014年11月26日）、この航空事故に関するテレビ番組を見ました。そこ内容から、DennisはDC-10の教官で、たまたまこの便に乗り合わせた、との事です。 上記抜粋中、"DC-10 instructor on board"にaが付いています。確かにDC-10の教官はアメリカには複数居たでしょうが、この事故機に乗り合わせたとなると、一人だけだと考えられます。 ですから、aでは不適切だと思います。

"a"でいいと筈ですよ。これではなく、"the" とすれば例の、とか、おきまりのみたいな意味みたいになりますからたまたま乗り合わせていたというニュアンスではなくなってしまいますよね。

Unexpectedly, we stopped in Sacramento on the way. Everybody got off the plane except one gentleman who was blind. I noticed him as I walked by and could tell he had flown before because his seeing eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of him throughout the entire flight. I could also tell he had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached him and, calling him by name, said, "Keith, we’re in Sacramento for almost an hour.
