関係代名詞の使い方についての疑問
- 関係代名詞の使い方について疑問があります。なぜthatがくるところがwhoでは駄目なのかがわかりません。
- thatが来る場合は、最上級や序数the only,the sameやallなどが来る場合と書かれていますが、suchもそれらに含まれると言うことでしょうか？
- 関係代名詞をよく判断する方法があれば教えてください。

She is a very kind and gentle teacher. All the students are fond of her. これを2つ繋げる問題で、答えは She is such a kind and gentle teacher that all the students are fond of her. になるようですが、thatがくるところがなぜwhoでは駄目なのかがわかりません。 thatが来る場合は、最上級や序数the only,the sameやallなどが来る場合と参考書に書かれていますが、suchもそれらに含まれると言うことでしょうか？ もしくは関係代名詞と考えては駄目でしょうか？ これらをうまく判断できる方法があればご伝授お願いいたします。

この that は関係代名詞ではありません。 She is so kind and gentle that ～のような so that 構文というのをご存じでしょうか？ 「とても～なので～」 この that は接続詞の that です。 前に先行詞となる名詞があるわけではありません。 so は後に形容詞１語（ここは and で２つつながれていますが）、あるいは副詞がきます。 その部分に名詞がくる場合（普通は形容詞＋名詞）に such を使うのです。 so kind → such a kind and gentle teacher 名詞 teacher があるから such であり、その名詞が先行詞となって、後に続くわけではありません。 such は so と同じように「そんな」→「とても」（本来、「それほど」であり、 否定文になると、そうなるのですが、単純には「とても」と思っておけばいいです）です。

She is a very kind and gentle teacher of whom all the students are fond. などと書けるでしょう。

ご参考までに http://seng571213.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-413.html 名詞の前に such が来れば、つぎは that と期待しますね。これから外れてはいけないかと聞かれれば、まあ、通じますね。全然ダメじゃないから、と言う答えになると思います。

上記の分では後半の節に目的語herが残っています。関係代名詞ととらえるならばherが不要です。 She is such a kind and kind teacher that(whom) all the students are fond of. 程度構文のthat節内には完全な文がきます。
