１。 your back is against the wall は、 直訳すれば「あなたに背中に壁がある」 ＞逃げ場が無い ＞追いつめられている ＞にっちもさっちもいかない ＞万事休す ＞猫を噛まなくてはならない窮鼠の状態 みたいな意味なんで ２。 Never use an exponential algorithm unless your back is against the wall. もう、どこを探しても他に打つ手は無い、万事休す、と言った場合以外は、決して exponential algorithm なんか使うんじゃねえぞ

Longman American Idiom dictionaryに次のように書かれてあります。 ・your back against the wall to be in a difficult situation that is very difficult to change or get out of ですから「追い詰められた場合」とか「窮地にたたされた場合」などという意味になります。ただしご質問の場合はプログラム処理に関する文章で使われていますので、「どうしても他の手立てがみつからない場合でなければ」といった日本語の方が適切ではないかと考えます。
