I have researched about antibiotic.
-What does antibiotic mean?-
The word antibiotic comes from Greek meaning ‘against’ and bios meaning ‘life’. Antibiotics are also known as antibacterial, and they are drugs used to treat infections caused by bacteria.
-How do antibiotics work?-
The antibiotics are the compound or substance that kill or slow down growth of bacteria. Penicillin is a bactericidal. The bactericidal usually either interferes with the formation of the bacterium’s cell wall or its cell contents. The antibiotic is a selective poison. It has been chosen to that it will kill the desired bacteria. But it’s not the cells in our body. Each different type of the antibiotic affects each different way. For example, the antibiotic inhibits and it can turn glucose into energy or its construct its cell wall. When it’s happened the bacterium dies instead of reproducing and at the same time the antibiotic acts only on the bacterium’s cell wall building mechanism, not on a normal cell’s. But the one disadvantage of antibiotic is antibiotics do not work on viruses because viruses are not alive. The bacterium is a living thing and reproducing life form though the viruses are just a piece of DNA or RNA. The viruses inject its DNA or RNA into a alive cell and has that cell reproduce more of the viral DNA or RNA. So viruses are so living anyway and antibiotics only work in bacteria or living thing.
-The history of antibiotic-
As I have just written on here antibiotic means ‘against life’ and it was thought by French bacteriologist called Vuillemin. The antibiotics were first described in 1877 in bacteria by Selman Waksman, an American microbiologist, in 1942. The one antagonistic activity by fungi against bacteria were first described in England by John Tyndall in 1875. The first sulfonamide and first commercially available antibacterial antibiotic, Prontosil, was developed by a research team led by Gerhard Domagk in 1932. Since it the opposite of antibiotic which is poison, virus or bacteria are used in Second World War. That’s why the Second World War also had a lot of diseases and loads of people were died. Even during the war two guys called Florey and Chain succeeded in purifying the first Penicillin in 1942. And since it all kinds of way to kill bacteria or dangerous bacteria were founded out.
