great a threat ??
The possibility of nuclear war with the Soviet Union did not seem as great a threat as it had in the past. Voice of Americaの文章です。 a great threat ではなく great a threat のはどのような理由、意味でしょうか。 形容詞のようにも使われているのでしょうか。辞書でも出てきません。

>a great threat ではなく great a threat のはどのような理由、意味でしょうか。 いい質問です。英語学習者なら一度は悩む文法事項です。 でも、 The possibility now is as great as it was in the past.（その可能性は今も過去と同じく大きい。） は理解していらっしゃると思います。 この例文は同等比較という構文です。「今」と「過去」の「可能性の大きさ」を比較しています。 もし「可能性は大きな脅威である」ということを「今」と「過去」で比較したいときはどうしたらいいでしょうか。つまり、 The possibility now is a great threat.と The possibility in the past was a great threat. を比較する場合です。 同じく同等比較構文を使いたいと思いますね。それで、 The possibility now is as a great threat as it was in the past. としたいのが人情ですよね。 ところがそうはいかないのです。 同等比較で使われている最初の「as」は「副詞」であるということを忘れてはいけません。 そうですね、副詞は直接名詞を修飾できないということです。 因みに、「as a great threat」と書いてあれば「as」は前置詞として受け取られ「大きな脅威として」という意味になると思います。 なので、 The possibility now is as great a threat as it was in the past. という風に、「as」の後には「形容詞」の「great」が来ざるを得ないのですね。 理由をつければ以上のようになると思いますが、不定冠詞の名詞が来る場合はそのような順番になると覚えておけばいいだけの話かもしれません。 この種の副詞には「as」の他に、 「so」「how」「too」 等があります。 以下、例文を（http://www.ravco.jp/cat/view.php?cat_id=5502）より引用させてもらいます。 He is so tall a man that he can reach the ceiling. 「彼は大変背が高い人なので天井に手が届く」 It was as fine a day as could be. 「この上なく天気の良い日であった」 Do you know how valuable a book this is ? 「これがなんと貴重な本なのか君はわかっているのか」 This is too good a story to refuse. 「これはあまりにも良い話なので断れない」 以上。 参考になれば幸いに思います。

suchとかasは必ず冠詞よりも前に来ます。というか、後ろにはこれないのだと思います。例文の場合、greatはasとつながっていますので併せて不定冠詞の前に来るしかないのです。
