one of these と one of the

Humans differ from other animals in many ways. One of these is that they are willing to engage in activities that are unpleasant in themselves but are means to the ends that they desire. 上の文を読んだときに One of these と言う箇所で私は ”Humansは人だからtheseでは受けないだろうけど、theseはanimalsかwaysのどちらを受けるのかな?” と思ったのですが、 参考書の解説を見ると、 もしhumans か animals を受けるならthemが使われます と書いてありました。 なぜそうなるのでしょうか?

these は今言ったことという意味で前の単語を受けますが、前の単語を them で受けて良いか迷うような状況で these を使います。 animals を受けるなら them を用いる人がずっと多くなります。these で受ける人はまずいません。"...animals. One of them is..." でも ways は animals とは違って抽象的な概念です。ways と言いましたが、実は「人が動物と違う点」という前の文章全体を ways で表しているようなところがあります。それを単純に代名詞 them で受けて良いかという迷いがあります。そこで these とすることで、「人が動物と違う点」の例を挙げようとしているのだということを強調するのです。(them で受けても間違いではありませんが)

    僕の考えですが these は、「これら」ですから、一番近い名詞の ways を指す、と思います。     話の流れから読者の注意はどんどん先に行くので、human なら a human、 animal を指すなら an  animal と遡って指すものを言い直すことになります。     それ以上に受けるものによって these になったり them になったり、という理由付けは、あまり説得力が無いと思います。

these は ways を指しています。 『もしhumans か animals を受けるならthemが使われます』の解説は誤っていると思います。文法的には ways, humans, animals のすべてを these, them の両方が指すこともあり得ます。ただ、この文の中では、these に一番近い ways を指しているのです。 this, that, these, those, it, they は、人でも人以外でも使われます。
