Why are there so many names for one small country?
- England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Britain, Great Britain, the United Kingdom - why are there so many names for one small country?

The area of england known as the lake district is in the northwestern corner of the country,just below the border with scotland. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty. With its wild hills dotted with small farmhouses and sheep,and its crystal clear lakes,it attracts thousands of tourists every year,both from britain and abroad. But the spectacular scenery is not only attraction. The lake district is associated with two of britain's best-loved writers:William Wordsworth, the nature poet,and Beatrix Potter,the creator of Peter Rabbit. Both these writers drew their inspiration from the natural beauty of the lake district.

ふと気になったので質問させていただきます。 イギリスは近代にウェールズ・スコットランド・アイルランドなどを併合し、自国の国土としました。 元来イギリス王国の呼称は England だったと思いますが、イングランド外の領土及び国民の事をないがしろにしているということで、 Britain、また正式呼称 United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland から U.K. という呼称を一般的に使うようになっていると思います。 しかし England から UK となったように、イギリス国民のことを表す Englishman よりも適切な言葉が分かりません。 British、Britというのも思いつきましたが、これは Britain の人々ということで北アイルランド人から不評を買う呼び方だと思います。 Newsweek などを読んでいると Briton をよく見かけますが、ブリトン人というと余計限定的な呼び方のような気がしまして……。 連合王国全体のことを UK と呼ぶように、連合王国民全体のことは何と呼べばいいのでしょうか。

as its name suggests, the area of england known as the midlands is in the middle of the country. this area used to be the heart of britain's manufacturing industry. the most important city in the region is birmingham,england's second city. at its peak in the 19th century,birmingham was the world's greatest industrial city,producing goods that were sold in britain's colonies and in other countries all around the world. the midlands,and birmingham in particular,1980s. the area lost around one third of its manufacturing jobs. the midlands played a very important role in the industrial revolution. one of the most famous towns there is shrewsbury. this was where british industrialists built the word's first iron bridge. another large town in the area is stoke-on-trent,the centre of britain's pottery industry. in fact,the district including stoke-on-trent and the five towns that surround it became known simply as "the potteries."the high-quality clay used to make the pots came from devon and cornwall in the southwest of england. the fuel used to fire the pottery kilns was coal,whch was easily available in the extensive local coalfields. in fact,the area became the largest pottery-making centre in the world in the 19th century. but it was a dirty and dangerous place to live. the smoke from the pottery factories covered everything with a layer of thick black soot. local workers suffered both from the soot and the dust that came from making the pots. living conditions were bad,and life expectancy was short. arnold bennett,the famous 19th-century novelist,memorably described life and work in the potteries in his novels such as clayhanger and anna of the five towns. the area is,of course,no longer the world's largest pottery centre. most british people now buy cheaper pottery imported from many different parts of the world. but there are still some very famous and old-established companies in the region that produce expensive,high-quality goods. these include such famous names as royal doulton,royal worcester,spode and wedgwood. wedgwood pottery is perhaps the best-known style of british pottery in japan. it has many designs,but the company's delicate and elaborately ornamented blue and white designs are especially famous. the company was founded by josiah wedgwood in 1759. wedgwood was not only a great designer,but also a man of science. he designed a device to measure the temperature of pottery kilns,and he was also responsible for developing revolutionary new glazes for his pots,which are still used today.

manchester is the undisputed "capital" of the north of england. whereas london's wealth was based on trade and finance,manchester's was built solidly on manufacturing. the north of england was the home of the industrial revolution,and manchester was its most important city. it had been an important textile-weaving centre since the 14th century. in the 18th century,however,the textile industry there boomed. this was the result of the combination of cheap cptton imported from the american colonies and the invention of mechanized weaving technology. workers began to flood into the city to find jobs in the new industries. the city became much richer,but living and working conditions were often terrible for the new industrial workers. they had to work from early morning till late at night in dirty,dangerous conditions. they lived in dark,cramped houses,which were squashed together in long rows. it is not surprising that many of the social reform movements in 19th-century britain started in manchester. manchester contineed to be economically successful into the 20th century. it had access to cheap cotton supplies from britain's colonies,especially india. the colonies also formed a huge market for manchester's manufacturedgoods. however,manchester was heavily bombed and badly damaged in the second world war. after the war,britain's manufacturing industries declined,and manchester's economy suffered very badly. unemployment rose,and the city lost much of its energy and dynamism. the city was bombed again in 1966,this time by the IRA,in protest against britain7s policies in northern ireland. much of the city's business centre was destroyed. this led to a huge program of rebuilding. the centre of manchester is now full of modern architecture,parks,and public spaces,as well as many bars and restaurants. it is a very different place compared with the old industrial city. in recent years,manchester has become famous for two things:music and soccer. during the 1980s,manchester was the home of a unique music scene,producing bands such as joy division,the happy mondays,and more recentry,oasis. it was also the place where huge dance clubs and the accompanying "rave" culture first sprang up. like many large british cities,manchester has two professional soccer clubs,manchester united and manchester city. of these,manchester united is the more famous. along with real madrid,it is plobably the best-known and most widely supported club in the world. the club has dominated english soccer for the last 20 years or so,and is rich enough to buy many of the world's best players. in 2004,the club bought the teenage genius,wayne rooner,at a cost of ￡27 million,after selling david beckham to real madrid the previous year.
