「場所」という場合に２通りあって， Japan, his house のように名詞を表す場合と， in Japan, at the place のように副詞的なものを表す場合があります。 私としては found 場所というのは後者のつもりでした。 there/home/abroad のような語は一語で副詞となれますが， place など，普通の名詞には前置詞が必要です。 be 動詞は後に場所を表す表現がくれば「ある／いる」の意味になるというのも， 副詞的な場所がくれば，ということです。 いずれにしても「～した場所で」見つけられた という「で」になります。 there なら「そこで」となりますが，the place であれば at the place とする必要があります。

回答ありがとうございます この文の場合 Ｔｈｉｓ is the place where Jon and Mary met.のような関係副詞と考えているのでなく Ｔｈｉｓ is the where he was talking about.のように 関係副詞とは別ものの（～する場所 ）という単語と考えてよろしいでしょうか？

後 ＞Remains found at the place where they lived 先行詞を置くのであれば，さらに at も必要です。 とありますがremains (which were) found 場所 で「場所で見つけられた遺跡」ならatがなくても成り立つのではないでしょうか 質問ばかりすいません
