英語と日本語のニュアンスの違いを教えていただきたいです。 以下二つの英日文におけるニュアンスの異なる箇所を教えていただきたいです。 恥ずかしいですが...品詞における違いしかわからないので、ご指導お願いいたします。 （1）How, in the name of good-fortune, did you know all that, Mr. Holmes?''he asked. ''How did you know, for example, that I did manual labour? It's as true as gospel, for I began as a ship's carpenter.'' 「いたいぜんたいどんなところから、そんなことまでおわりでした？ たとえば私が手先の労働をやったなんてことが、どうしておわかりでした？ まるで神様のようですね。まったくのところ私は、船大工からみを立てたのです」 （2）The stout gentleman half rose from his chair and gave a bob of greeting, with a quick little questionin glance from his small fat-encircled eyes. ウイルスンと呼ばれたその肥った紳士は、中腰に尻を浮かせて、肉のもりあがった目瞼の奥にある小さな目でテラチラと、もの間いたげに私を見ながら、かるく会釈した。

A ship's carpenter specializes in shipbuilding, maintenance, and repair techniques (see also shipwright) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpentry ship's carpenter 船大工 http://eow.alc.co.jp/ship's+carpenter/UTF-8/?ref=sa ＞ニュアンスの異なる箇所 （１） ・It's as true as gospel, ・まるで神様のようですね 突っ込みを入れるとしたら、英文は「どれくらい正しいか」について聖書の正しさと比べて自分と聞き手の信仰心を前提に言っているのですが、日本語のほうは、自分と相手の信仰心とは関係なく「相手が、漠然とすごい、正しい。」と言っているようにもとれる、、。しかし、宗教的な文化が違いますからこれ以上訳しようがない気がします。 （２） ・肉のもりあがった目 ・fat-encircled eyes 日本語文から英語文が想像できませんでした。 ただ訳的には正しいと思います。 fat-encircled eyesは、彫が深いネイテブが太ると、彫りのあった部分が脂肪で埋まってしまい彫が深くなくなった目元の状態ですよね？（彫の深さ的には日本人感覚では普通。） ネイテブからすると、凹んでいるのが普通の目元が「脂肪で埋まってしまった目」なので「肉のもりあがった目」としたのでしょう。 ただ、日本人からすると、ネイテブのように彫が深い顔が一般ではありませんから、日本人感覚で、「肉のもりあがった目」というと、病的に盛り上がった目を想像してしまいます。 これは、外国の作品なんだな、、と思って読めばネイテブ感覚のままの訳だと言えるのかな？？？ もの間いたげに＞もの問いたげに ご参考まで、

＃１です。補足です。 （１）a ship's carpenter が、「船大工」と訳されています。船大工は、『日本国語大辞典』には「木造船・和船を造る大工」と定義されています。これには someone who builds, or repairs ships と言うロングマンの下記の shipwright の定義が近いでしょう。 http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/shipwright a ship's carpenter と言うのは船をつくる人ではなくて、乗組員で船上の大工仕事をする人のことですから、「船大工」ではありません。 僕の祖父が大工だったので、余計なことかも知れませんが、気づきましたので一言付け加えます。

いいんじゃないですか？ １。manual labour というのは「手先の労働」というよりは「筋肉労働」「肉体労働」「（頭を使うよりは）体を使う仕事］と言ったことかな、と思います。 いたい＞いったい、おわり＞おわかり などはタイプのミスですね。 ２。a quick little questionin glance は、不定冠詞でも、名詞の形でも「単数」です、しかし「テラチラ」というのは一度だけには使いません。それにこの紳士の他の描写とも合いません。「ジロリ」と見る感じがします。 fat-encircled eyes.「肉の盛り上がった目瞼」ですが、「腫れぼったい目」という表現もあります。 もの間いたげに＞もの言いたげに？ 後はとても上手だと思いました。
