現実には現在の世界にいるのに，過去のことを言うと考えると仮定法となってしまいますが， あくまでも過去の現実のことを述べているので，仮定法ではありません。 ただ，過去のことであり，あくまでも推量するしかありません。 その過去の推量を would は表しています。 まあ，would というのは「...であろう」のような意味で，それが日本語的に仮定法の意味にもなれば過去の推量の意味にもなるわけです。 あと，rather higher とあり， and in fact continued higher in seventeen and eighteen centuries がコンマでくくられていることを考えると， than 以下は最初の the position of the merchant had been rather higher in the sixteen century にも，かかっています。
