Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age." １．この中のbut also のあたりは「我々の経済が弱くなってしまったのはgreed and irresposibility…だけでなくour collective…のせいでもある」ととっていいですか。 ２．consequence of のあとにnot only を補って解釈していいですか。もしそうなら「not only」は省略されることもあるということですか。 ３．prepareはmakeと並列でto を共有していると考えていいですか。 自信がないので、教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

こんにちは！ ＞１．この中のbut also のあたりは「我々の経済が弱くなってしまったのはgreed and irresposibility…だけでなくour collective…のせいでもある」ととっていいですか。 ●はい、その通りです。図示しますと a consequence of A) greed and irresponsibility on the part of some B) our collective failure to make hard choices...（文末まで） で、A)だけでなく B)の結果でもある、ですね。on the part of ～は、意味上の主語を表す言い方で、所有格の変わりになります。ある人々（＝some）の貪欲と無責任、ということです。 ＞２．consequence of のあとにnot only を補って解釈していいですか。もしそうなら「not only」は省略されることもあるということですか。 ●そういうことです。not only A but also B にはさまざまなバリエーションがあります。not only が出てこない場合もあれば、but alsoが出てこないものもあります。 ＞３．prepareはmakeと並列でto を共有していると考えていいですか。 ●これもその通りです。ただ No.1 のお方がおっしゃるように、and で区切られて、２つの違った行為をするのではなく、make hard choices することがprepare the nation for a new age に通じるという感じで ワンセット・フレーズです。文法的にはもちろん prepare は toにつながっています。 以上、すべて正解ということです！

Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also 私の解釈ですが、 Our economy is badly weakenedの後にカンマで、その状況を同格的に a consequence だといっていると思います。 on the part of some が not only の代わりみたいなもので、 some は Our economy is badly weakened という現状をさし、 on the part of some で「その現状の一因は」 a consequence of greed and irresponsibility がであり、 but also.. 「（それだけでなく）～だ」とつづくわけです。 make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age はひとかたまりで、～and～ 「～して～する」 「厳しい決断を下して新しい時代のために国を整える」 と言う感じですね。

(1)Not only～but also の構文がどうもわかりません。 Not onlyの後、but alsoの後は動詞がくるのでしょうか？名詞が来ることもあると思いますがいかがなのでしょうか？ (2)not onlyの品詞は何でしょうか？ (3)make you eligible のmakeは使役動詞でしょうか？もしそうでしたらyouの後は動詞がくるのではないのでしょうか？eligibleと形容詞がきています。 基本的なことで恐縮でございますが、ご指導の程どうぞ宜しくお願い申し上げます。
