ちょっと暇なので訳してみました。 感染症の治療に広く用いられている抗生剤の大多数と ヒトの病原体が獲得した抗生剤耐性遺伝子は それぞれ同じ環境を起源に持つ。 最近の研究では、それぞれの環境におけるこれらの役割は、 医療における「武器と盾」という役割とは大きく異なると言われている。 大量の抗生物質をまき散らすといった、生態系の変化は 薬剤耐性による選択のように、微生物の分布を変え、 その結果、ヒトの健康に予測困難な影響を与える。 ・・・おそらく、 「現在たくさんの種類の抗生剤が必要であることと、 病原菌が耐性遺伝子を獲得することの原因は同じで、 単に病気を治すのに抗菌薬を使ったからというだけではなく、 自然環境に対して抗生物質を使ったことも影響している。」 という意味ではないでしょうか。 selection of resistanceは、抗生剤を使うことによって、それまでたくさんいた菌が死滅し、（突然変異などにより）たまたまその薬に耐性をもつ一部の菌がその環境を支配することを言います。
