hold out
以下の文で質問があります。 I am hoping that the rain holds out long enough for me to go to the mall and back. 「モールに行って戻ってくるまで雨が降らないといいな」ということでいいんでしょうか。 常識で考えるとそのような気がするのですが・・・ rainが主語になっているので、hold outは「持ちこたえる、抵抗する、もつ、間に合う」という意味だとすると、「雨が（抵抗して）降りつづける」という逆の意味にもとれないのでしょうか。ちょっと混乱しているのでどなたか解説していただけるとありがたいです。

私がモ－テルに行って戻ってくる間、雨がずぅ～と降りつづいてないといいんだけどな。 この場合のholdはおっしゃる通り持続の意味だと思います。 long enoughでずぅ～と（もう足りるほど降っている）の意味です。と私は解釈いたしました。 きっと一日中降っていたので、そういう会話になったのだと思います。

持ちこたえる、という意味で モールに行って戻ってくるまで雨が「もちこたえて」くれればいいな、 という意味でいいと思います。 holdにはいろんな意味がありますがこれに限らず使いどころが様々です。 持ちこたえる，耐える，屈しない，などの意味がありますが天候や好運などが 続くことや持つ（現状を保つという意味で）時はhold outを使うようです。

I am having an issue with our 13-year-old bichon frise and am hoping that you can point me in the right direction. We adopted our dog when he was 1 year old, and he was house-trained. Until recently, our work schedule allowed us to walk him three times a day. Midsummer, my husband changed jobs, and we now are able to walk him only twice a day. 以前も同じような質問をしたのですが、 彼の娘は学校に通うほどの年齢ではありませんという文を英訳すると His daughter is not old enough to go to school. らしいのですが、 この英文は 彼の娘は十分な年齢でないので学校に行けます。 という意味にはとれないのでしょうか？ このnotはold enough(十分な年齢）にかかっていて否定を表し、 to go to schoolは「学校に行ける」という肯定の意味を持つのではないのでしょうか？
