He was more optimistic that A... than he was that B.... 彼は B よりも A が起こると考えていた。 optimistic about somthing ではなく optimistic that.. の場合は上記のようになるでしょう。 可能性は専門家ではないので良くわかりませんが、 彼は少なくともそう考えていたのでしょう。 文脈的にあってると思いますが、どうでしょうか。

He would get so involved in his play that when it was time to go home,he would cry again. 彼は遊びに熱中するあまり、帰宅する時間になるとまた泣き叫ぶのであった なんですがなぜwould getとなるんでしょうかcryという動詞があるのにgetという動詞があるのがよくわからないです（getは和訳にも入っていませんしwould getでなくwasならわかるんですが また Ｈe would enjoy himself so much in his play that he would cry again,refusing to go home. 彼は遊びを楽しんでいたので、帰宅するのを拒否してまた泣き叫ぶのであった こちらもenjoyとcryという動詞があってよくわからないです 後こちらの文はso～that…の～の部分が much in his play となっていて （とてもmuch in his play なので… となって意味がよくわからないです） わからない部分の説明がへたですいません

接続詞that＋代名詞that文で、接続詞thatが省略されない、または出来ないのは何故？ NHK実践ビジネス英語2017年9月号までお休みして、過去のテキストを整理中です。 その中で、例文中に”that that”と続く文がいくつか見つかりました。 下記(1)から(8)中で、さすがに(4)の”Not that that’s a bad thing”の”Not that”は、”I don’t say that”の省略形かな。その省略を表す接続詞thatの省略は不可でしょうが、それ以外は何故、省略しない、または、できないのでしょうか？ 例文(7)(8)の2番目のthatは、指示形容詞かな。その例文(7)のI am glad [that]…は、参考書で「thatが省略されるのが普通である」という事例にもなっています。 (1) Recent surveys tell us that that's far from the truth. King Arthur (written by David Franzoni) で、わからないところがあるのでお願いします。牢を壊して中に踏み込んだところ、多くの死体が横たわっていました。その悲惨な状況を見たMerlinの様子をthe lieutenantの視点から書いた部分です。 His expression revealed little, but the lieutenant understood immediately that Merlin knew more than he was saying. he was sayingといいながら、章の始めからここまで誰もしゃべっていないので、sayを進行形で使っている意味がわかりません。それに、knowも辞書をひくと微妙な意味がいろいろあるだけに、ピンときません。分別がある、かもしれないし、認識する、かもしれず、ぴったりとした意味がわかりません。 knew more than he was sayingをキーにして検索すると、かたまりとして使われることが多いようなんです。イディオムとまではいかなくても、よく口にされるような連続した句なのでしょうか。 「表情以上にいろいろと感じている」とか「大人で分別があるからいちいち表情に出さないのだ」とか、いろいろ意味を考えてみたのですが、わけがわからなくなる一方です。はっきりした意味のとり方を説明していただけると助かります。よろしくお願いします。
