こういう all that の用法は一般的ですか
ある小説にこういう文章がありました。 （貧しい演奏者志望の若者に向けられた言葉です） It's too bad, but if he is as poor as all that, he really has no hope of accomplishing anything in music. 「all that それほど」には「not」を伴うと辞書にありますが。

はじめまして。 ご質問： ＜「all that それほど」には「not」を伴うと辞書にありますが。＞ そんなことはありません。他の回答にある通り、肯定文・否定文どちらでも使用可能です。 ただ、この例文のall thatは、「それほど」という副詞として用いられたものではありません。 このthatは代名詞「それ」で、as poor asの比較の対象になっています。直訳は「それと同じくらい貧しい」→「それほど貧しい」という意味になります。 allは「全く」「すっかり」といった強意の用法として使われている副詞で、文を修飾しているものと思われます。 例： he is as poor as that 「それほど貧しい」 he is as poor as all that 「それほどまでに貧しい」 「までに」にallの強意の意味が含まれています。 以上ご参考までに。

こんにちは！ （１）よく使う用法だと思います。英和辞典の "all that" についての説明は、まだまだ貧弱に思います。中辞典で as ... as all that を収録していたのは、『グランド・コンサイス』のみでした。我が愛する『スーパー・アンカー』は、見出しさえ掲載していないつれなさでした。 It can't be as bad as all that.＝ It can't be all that bad. （そんなにひどいはずはない。）（『グランド・コンサイス』） （２）＞＞「all that それほど」には「not」を伴うと辞書にありますが。 He isn't all that bad. のように、否定が多いでしょうね。でもこの場合のように、条件節でなら、肯定文でも大いにありえます。日本語でも、「もしそんなにひどいなら」って言いますね。それは英語にすると、If he is as bad as all that と普通に言うと思います。 （３）御質問の文にあるif he is as poor as all that は、「もし彼がそこまで貧乏なら」ということで、ひどさを強調した言い方になっています。 以上、少しでも御参考になれば幸いです。

三番サンが辞書の件に触れられたので一言献上、、、、 1) 原文がそれなりのひとによって書かれている、出版されていて大勢に人が見ておかしくない(文法的に変でない)のなら、それは明らかに「使われる」「頻繁ではないが充分使用に耐えている」語法だとの自分なりの理解の元に 2)手持ちの辞書に相談、「おや、おかしいぞ」、すると自分の解釈はおかしいのかな、イヤ、待てよ、他の辞書に当たってみよう 3)こんな過程で、ボキャブラリーも語法も自分なりに自然に蓄積されてくるのではないのかと その辞書は今すぐ棄てなくてもいいので(笑)、別の辞書を一冊購入することをお勧めします。あの知恵と知識の塊が、僅か三千円位で自分のモノになるのですから、お安いお買い物です。尤も使いこなすという条件で。

all that そのようなものすべて、それほど（までに）～、そんなに～、～だけ、～だけのことでしかない、～でしかない、～に過ぎない / 【用例】 Be all that you can be. : 《米陸軍の募集広告》可能性を引き出せ。 「英辞郎」○○引用で申し訳ありませんが、 「それ程までに困窮しているのなら」と普通に意訳できますが。 よく似た言葉で、「such that」=「それほど」みたいな言い回しも有ったような無いような漠然とした記憶が。

Google で"if * as * as all that" で検索しますと http://www.google.co.jp/search?num=50&hl=ja&q=%22if+*+as+*+as+all+that%22&btnG=%E6%A4%9C%E7%B4%A2&lr= と13,000件もヒットしますので、普通に使われる言い方かと思います。 日本語でも「それほど」で考えてみると、普通は否定文ですが（私はそれほどバカじゃない）、仮定でも使いますし（私がそれほどバカだとしたら）、反語的疑問文でも使いますよね（私はそれほどバカか？）。 英語でも反語的疑問文でも多く使われているようですので、日本語と同じと考えてもいいのかもしれません。 ただし、これはあくまでも私が今思いついたことですので、嘘っぱちかもしれませんが。

I’ve been a really bad friend. Last year, I was in a bad living situation. My best friend owns several properties and helped me out; he asked a long-term tenant to leave, refurbished the whole apartment, and then offered it to me at a steep discount so I could afford it. It’s literally the most beautiful, spacious place I have ever lived in. This coincided with a very intense romantic relationship I was caught up in—which, of course, broke up spectacularly when he stole my stuff and left the country. I realize now that I was really thoughtless. My friend did a lot of the renovations himself and spent thousands of dollars on necessary (but much-appreciated) upgrades. At the time, I was so focused on my relationship that I didn’t even think about pitching in. And now, looking back, I didn’t show up once to clean or paint, or even just bring dinner and say thank you. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried to be a good tenant and show my gratitude.
