VOAの英語です。 ある年の12月25日に、ドミニカで3人の女性が、彼女たちが行った政治活動を理由に、独裁者により暗殺されるという事件があったようです。 この前置きがあり、以下の英語に続きます。 In December of nineteen ninety-nine, the United Nations recognized the observance. The General Assembly declared November twenty-fifth the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. この文で、recognized the obsevance はどんな意味でしょうか。obsevanceは法令順守などという意味があるみたいですが、どうもこの文にはふさわしくないような気がします。

recognized the obsevance 英和辞典をもう一度見てください。 recoginize: 認める、認可するなど observe:祝祭日等を祝う observance:祝うこと、式典、行事 使用しているアメリカのダイアリカレンダーのなかに、martin ruthur king's birthday observed などと書かれています。（observed と書かれていると、当日は、州、機関によりますが、学校は休み、会社は就業しますが）。

observanceは、「祝祭日、記念日」のような意味だと思います。 ドミニカの3人の女性が暗殺されたのは1960年11月25日のようですが、それ以降、11月25日は女性に対する暴力に反対する人たちにとって重要な記念日だったのでしょう。 そして、1999年の国連総会決議によって、国連がその記念日を、International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Womenとして正式に認知したと言っているのだと思います。

(2)別の記事ですがwillは必要なのでしょうか？ 「ムシャラフ大統領が軍のチーフとして辞任するかどうかを議論した…」のような意味だと思うのですがwillが変に感じます。 「辞任する(だろう)かどうか？」willの必要性がわかりません。。。 お願いします。

こんにちは。わからないところがあるので教えていただけたらと思います。 The United Nations has made fourteen appeals for aid to Africa so far this year. Yet eight of those appeals have received less than twenty percent of the amount requested. And only one, a small appeal for Angola, has received more than forty percent. この文は話の一番最初なのですが、receive の使い方がすっきりしません。意味はおそらく、 国連は今年の今までのところアフリカへの援助についての14個の哀願（？）をしました。 しかし、それらの哀願のうち8つは頼んだ額の20%より低かった。 そして唯一アンゴラのための小さな哀願だけが40%以上だった。 だと思います。 しかし、 Yet eight of those appeals have received less than twenty percent of the amount requested. の部分ですが、receiveをそのまま「受け取る」と考えると、 哀願は20%以下を受け取った。 となり、哀願が受け取るというのはおかしいというかすっきりしません。 無生物主語にしても受け取るのは哀願ではないような・・・ 英語的表現であり、一言で言えばこういうものなんでしょうか？ 個人的にはappealってのもなんかしっくりきません^^; よろしくお願いします。

英語やり直し組です 本日「This matter is of grave concern to the United Nations」という文を見ました。 importanceとは違いof grave concrenのofは無くてもいいように感じたので色々調べてみたのですが Of greater concern is … Of immediate concern is … のようにofがあるのと My biggest concern is … concern is … のように無いのが多く見つかりました。 有っても無くても意味はわかるので気にする必要はないのかもしれませんがこの場合どっちでもいいのでしょうか？ お願いします。
