ちょっとつまずいてしまう部分があります
（注）最初のThe division は「popular musicとclassical musicの区別」のことです The division between the two worlds has always been fairly clearly defined, with those who are active in one sphee rarely trespassing in the other, and never more so than today, when, instead of the distinction being based on fluctuating artistic taste, it is fairly firmly based on economic consideration. never more so than todayのところがよく分かりません。前文とのつながりで構造的に何だか浮いているような気がするのですが、これは文が省略されている形なのですしょうか。それと、soはどのような意味でしょうか。よろしくお願いします。

and never more so than today の省略・代用を復元するなら、 and the division between ... has NEVER been MORE clearly defined THAN TODAY ということになります。soは、お考えのとおり、clearly defined の代用と考えればいいでしょう。「今日ほど区別がはっきりしていたことはかつてなかった」という意味になります。 それと、この文で使われているコンマはすべて必要なものですね。どれも省けそうにありません。コンマを省くと今より読みにくくなるでしょう。コンマを減らそうと思ったら、文の構造自体を大幅に変えなければならないんじゃないでしょうか。 経済的要因というのは、ポップスとクラシックの「市場」がくっきりと区別されているということでしょう。端的にいえば、CD屋でポップスの棚とクラシックの棚のどちらに並べられるかを、CDメーカーがすでに決めた上で作っているというような。どちらの棚に並ぶかが、すなわち「The division is clearly defined」ということになるわけです。

今日よりも(以前の方が)もっとsoということはなかった。 soはThe division between the two worlds has always been fairly clearly definedのあたりを指していると思います。 when ( instead of the distinction being based on fluctuating artistic taste )it is fairly firmly based on economic consideration. はtodayの説明だと思います。 ところでこの文章、コンマはもともとおおかったのでしょうか？ なんか多すぎる気がしますが。 ※副詞的な要素を省くと The division has always been fairly clearly defined, and never more so than today, when it is fairly firmly based on economic consideration. となると思います。 has beenのあたりは過去で、todayやその説明部分のisは現在のことですね。 問題となっているnever more soには動詞が省略されていて時制が直接は分からないけれど、たぶん、has beenと同じ時制でしょう。

こんばんは： この二つの世界の境界線は、一方に熱心な人々は決して他方に足を踏み入れず、以前からかなり明確に引かれている。そしてこの二つの分野の区別が移り気な芸術的趣向に基ずくものではなく、経済的配慮にかなり密接に関係している今日ほどその傾向が強いときはない。 つまり、ポピュラーミュージックとクラシックはこれまでも明確に差別化されていたが、こんにちではその傾向がさらに強い。それはその二つの分野が好き嫌いではなく、経済的理由に起因しているからだ。 ということだと思います。 でも、私に日本語変かも。。。

"never more so than today"は、「（これまでもそうだったけれど）こんにちほど、そうであったことは以前にはなかった」というつながりではないでしょうか。 "when"以下は今日の状況を説明しているわけでしょう。 "so"の意味は、「ふたつの音楽の世界がかなり明確に区別されている」ということでしょう。 ざっと読ませていただいて、以上のように判断し、回答します。 わたしも、明朝、再考してみますが、別の解釈をお持ちの方がいらっしゃたら御指摘下さい。

Aliasさんお返事どうもありがとうございます。なるほど、soはclearly defined の代用と考えれば良かったんですね。これではっきりわかりました。 ＞どちらの棚に並ぶかが、すなわち「The division is clearly defined」ということになるわけです。 うん、そういえばクラシックのほうはっきりそれとわかるように分かれていますね。棚の分け目というのはイメージしやすいです。もちろんこれが全部というわけじゃないだろうと思いますが市場といわれてもピンとこないのでわかりやすかったです。どうもありがとうございました。
