これは、その映画の話の内容で違って来ると思います。 「誰も、二人のあいだに割って入ることはできなかった」という、過去に成立した厳然とした事実の強調の場合、可能の can の過去の could です。 しかし、過去の確定事実ではなく、今後のことについて、未来のことについて、すでに答えを知っていて、それを、前提に、現在時称で表現している場合、「事実に反する条件・想像の could」です。この場合、「誰も二人のあいだに割り込むことはできないはずだが」の意味で、「できなかったはずだが」として過去でもよいのですが、「事実」は、二人のあいだに介入する者がいて、「誰も裂くことはできない（はずだった）……しかし裂かれた恋だった」という意味だと思います。 この場合、二人の「運命の恋」はどうなるのか、誰も裂くことができなかったのか、裂かれたのか、これ自体が、映画の観客の興味を引く点ですから、わざと曖昧に両義的になっているのだとも思えます。「裂かれたのか、裂かれなかったのか、運命の愛の行方は？」というような感じではないでしょうか。

could というのは、can の過去形ですが意味は「現在における推量」を表します。そういう意味では、must や may と同じような働きをしますが、確信度はそれらより低くなります。どちらかというと might に近い確信度です。ですから日本語で言うとすれば「～かもしれない」あるいは「たぶん～だろう」という程度の推量になります。 「NOTHING ON EARTH COULD COME BETWEEN THEM.」＝「地上の何物も彼らの中に割って入ることはできないだろう。」という意味合いになるはずです。言い換えれば、 「It is impossible that nothing on the earth come between them.」と言えます。 「現在から見た過去の推量」を表す場合には、普通、 「主語 ＋ could + have + 過去分詞」が使われます。 詳しい英和辞典、あるいは英英辞典で調べればすぐわかります。
