この時のthanって・・・？
The use of a language by others than those born to it directly reflects the political,economical and influence of those whose native tongue it is. このthanは比較で使われているんですか? 私としては、接続詞みたいなものかなぁ・・・と思ったのですが、辞書にはhardly,bealy,scarslyなどの語があるときだけwhenとして使う、としか書いてありませんでした。 この時のthanの使い方を教えて下さい。 （出来れば,文の文法的説明もお願いします。）

学習院大学 文学部 >The use of a language by others than those born to it directly reflects the political, economical and "cultural" influence of those whose native tongue it is. than は比較だよ。単純化して覚えれば良い。 those born to it "と比べて" 違う人たち（others） The use of a language by others than those born to it 使用 of ある言語 by 違う人たち と比べて その言語を母語とする人たち directly reflects 直接的に 反映する the political, economical and cultural influence of those whose native tongue it is. 影響 of 非母国語の人たちの母語そのもの 外国人（非母国語者）による言語の使用は、その人たちの母語そのものの政治的、経済的、文化的影響を直接的に反映する。

other thanは比較に準じる表現ですね。 ここでまとめてみましょう。 優等比較・・・比較級+形容詞(副詞)+than 劣等比較・・・less+形容詞(副詞)+than 同等比較・・・as+形容詞(副詞)+than 比較に準じる表現としては other thanの他にsame as があります。 それから differentではthanも使われますが、fromの方がよく使われます。

than は厳密な意味での比較級以外に，other や different などの後でも用いられます。日本語でも「～より他の」「～より異なる」と言えるのと似ていると思います。また，「厳密」と言ったのも，「他の」「異なる」というのは意味的に比較に通ずるものがあると思います。 ここでは，the use of a language by others than those born to it「その言葉を生まれながらに用いる人以外の人による言葉の使用（→人によって，言葉が用いられること）」という意味になります。those は people の意味で用いられています。 ただ，influence の前に何か抜けているのではないでしょうか。

The Wall Street Journalの9月5日付けの記事 Senior Spending to Give Japan a Lift の中に次の一節が出てきます。 According to a JTB survey, more of those born between 1946 and 1950 said they would spend more time and money on hobbies than said they would refrain from being extravagant. 後半のthanの後のsaidは過去形と考えられますが、この例のような主語の省略は一般的なのでしょうか。. . .than they said they would refrain from. . .という言い方も出来ますか？よろしくご教示を お願いいたします。

こないだテストでだされたんですが和訳した回答を配ってくれませんでした。。。自分の訳があっているか知りたいのでだいたいで良いので和訳できる人がいたらよろしくお願いします。。。 You may wonder why Hawaiians are so eager to maintain their native language. I think the answer is that language is more than just a means of exchanging information. We see the world around us through the window of our language. It enables us to share the history and culture of our people, and so it helps us find our identity. If we lose our language, we lose something of ourselves. Imagine that English has taken the place of the Japanese language here in Japan. What happens to your culture and identity? English is useful for communication in many parts of the world, but your mother tongue is an important part of your identity. In Japan ,too,there is a minority language, just as in Hawaii. The Ainu people have lose much of their language and culture. Today, they are trying to revive their traditions. In this class we are going to study English of course, but I want you to remember that your mother tongue is the most important language in the world. - One of those・・とは何でしょうか？
野球中継を英語で見ていて、ネイティブの実況が『It was one of those knuckleball！』と言っておりました。 僕の解釈ですと、『ナックル・ボールの一種（の変化球）です』と いう意味だと思うのですが、単純に『Some kind of kuckleball』『Similer to kuckleball』と言う言い方とは何か違うと思います・・ One of thoseをつけることでどのような意味になるのでしょうか？？
