「お礼」欄を拝見しました。 この文章は、どこから引用されたのですか？ liveのあとにinを置く必要はありませんが、もし原文が正しいとすれば、この文を作った人は、次のようなつもりで書いたのでしょう。 “He described the work (how) he did it and the times (when) he lived.” このように考えると、あなたも納得行くのではありませんか。

これは単に、原文が間違っているのでしょう。 he did の次の”it”が余分で、正しくは、 ”He described the work he did and the times he lived.” と書くべきでしょう。

＞he did の次の”it”が余分で、正しくは、 ”He described the work he did and the times he lived.” と書くべきでしょう。 お返事ありがとうございます。確かにworkと同格というのはおかしいですよね。thatも書かれていないし。それと、後ろのliveのほうなのですが、これはこのままでよいのでしょうか。timeにかかるためには、 the times he lived in にしないといけないのではないかと思ったのですが。

ある問題にて、 Did you write the letter with a pen or a pencil? の答えとして、 選択肢の中の I wrote it with a pen. が正答で、 I did it with a pen. が誤答となっていました。 後者が誤答の理由はなんでしょうか。 前者の違いはwroteがdidになっている点のみで、didはwriteを受けられないのでしょうか。 自分としては、writeが（didがあるので過去の意味ですが）見た目は原形なので、過去をあらわすdidは使えないのかな、とも思いました。 教えていただければうれしいです。 よろしくお願いします。

英語に堪能な方、あるいは英文法を専門としている方にお尋ねいたします。 ある英文による専門的な文法書の「倒置」と「情報構造」を扱った部分を読んでいるんですが、どうしてもわからない箇所があります。それは、次の英文(1)の ”so did I” の部分の意味についてです。 1. (He wanted to leave) and so did I. 普通は 2. (彼は行きたかった）そして僕も行きたかった。 でしょう。 が、もう一つ “so” が subjunct（この著者による副詞の下位分類で日本語では「従接詞」あるいは「下接詞」と約されているようです）の場合は違った意味になるという旨が書かれています。 私は、もしかすると 3. 私もとっても行きたかった という意味かな？と思いますがよくわかりません。ご教授ください。 （なお、該当箇所はR. Quirk. 他(1985) “A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language”のp.1382のll.1-2です。）

So, that's who did it. あ, そうだったのか, あの人がそれをしたのか. ここのwhoは先行詞が存在しないので関係代名詞whoではないということでしょうか？仮にそうだとすると、 名詞節だと思うのですが、和訳を見る限り 特定の人を表しているのでwhoの意味との整合性が取れなくなってしまいます・・・ ここでのwhoは何の用法のwhoなのでしょうか？

When did he tell you this？ の意味についてです。 あるドラマでの流れです。 人物的には、Ａさん、Ｂさん、Ｃさん。 Ｃさんは時差のある所へ出向いています。 (1)Ａさん： 昨夜、Ｃさんより、○○を発見したと連絡がありました。 (2)Ｂさん： それはいい知らせだ。 When did he tell you this? (3)Ａさん： 彼が連絡してきたのは、私が寝る前でした。 彼はそこに着き次第、探しに行ったのです。 ～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～ When did he tell you this? は、 「いつ、彼は君にこれを話したのか？」（彼が連絡して来たのはいつ？） となりますが、 (1)で、「昨夜」と言っているので、何で改めて聞いたのか？が、ひっかかりました。 で、質問ですが、 When did he tell you this? は、 「これは（発見したのは）、いつのことだと、彼は君に伝えたのか？」 という意味にも取れるのでしょうか？ 取れるのであれば、話の流れは合います。 Ａさんは、いつ発見したかまでは知らない為、分かっている時間関係だけを答えたということです。 取れないのであれば、Ｂさんは、「昨夜」と聞きながら、また同じ質問をしたということになります。 あるいは「昨夜って、昨夜のいつ頃よ」という感じで聞いたのかも知れませんが。 When did he tell you this? の取りうる意味合を教えて頂ければと思います。 以上、宜しくお願いします。

次のセンテンスに関して、 He knew he did not have much longer to live. He told a friend one day: "When I look back over the ranks of those with whom I have lived and loved, it is like looking over a field of battle. All fallen." ＊the ranks of those with whom I have lived and loved について、 １．I have lived with the ranks of those から、the ranks of those with whom I have lived が生じたのだということ、は分かりますが、。 ２．and loved がよく分かりません。 I have loved with the ranks of those ・・・・・ではないと思うのですが・・・・。 have loved the ranks of those だと思うのですが（love は他動詞）・・・・。どうでしょう？ だとすると、この場合、目的語になりますので、関係代名詞は省略されている、と考えるのか？ あるいはwith whom の whom を借用している？ と見るのかです。

ご回答ありがとうございます。すいません、この文は、英作文の本の解答の一節です。 「政治家の伝記がその人物の仕事とその人物が生きた時代を描くのは当然だが、同時にそれは・・・・・」という文の英訳です。howとwhenは省略できないと思うので、 “He described the work (how) he did it and the times (when) he lived.” か “He described the work he did and the times he lived in ” 間違いかでしょうか。下の文でも良いですよね。上の文は納得できましたが。
