よく、”So much for today.”とか”So much for such serious siscussion.”という言い回しがありますが、この場合「～についてはそれだけにしておく」という訳がマッチすると思います。 ところが以下のような文章の中では、どうにも訳できないのですがどんな訳になるのでしょうか？ 辞典には、この意味しかありませんでしたが、他の意味もあるのでしょうか？ 1.So much for Jim not telling people how to live their lives, she thought sourly. 2.I can not get it off the pan--so much for it being nonstick.

こんにちは。 以前から複数形の使い方について疑問に思ってきたことがあります。 たとえば、彼らはクッキーを食べたという簡単な英文を書くとします。 この場合、彼らは複数なのだからクッキーも食べられた合計では複数なので、 They eat cookies. と書くのか、 一人ひとりの食べた量はひとつなのだから、 They eat a cookie. と書くのかわからなくなります。 同じようなもので、 彼、彼女らは育児中は休暇をとることができます。 彼、彼女らが育てる子供らは合計では複数なので They can take holidays when they care for their children. なのか、 一人ひとりでは一人ずつ育てるので、 They can take holidays when they care for their child. なのか、はたまたもしや、一人ひとりに着目して、 They can take holidays when he or she care for his or her child. だったりするのか、 また、 They can take holidays when they care for their child. なら、 彼らは彼らの子供を育てるとき(彼ら全員が自分の子供かどうかは関係なく一斉に)休みをとることができます。 という意味にはならないのでしょうか。 基準等をご存知ならば教えていただけませんか。 どうぞよろしくお願いします。
