まずは He ・・ must apply himself to V 彼(人)はVするために専心しなければならない。 前置詞+名詞、つまり of his forces と to idle spectators を飛ばして(Mと見て) who ・・ themselves も関係詞節として飛ばします。 such A as B BのようなA でBのところに動詞が来ているパターンです。 そこで to work with such concentration as looks like madnss 狂気に見えるような集中力を持って働くために of his forces は集中させるもの(ofの目的格としての使い方)として訳しました。

a concentration of his force ~force, as, to~ はasの使い方がいまいち分からなかったからsuch A as to Bの構文風に訳しました。

The first essential in elephant training is to assign to the animal a single trainer who will be entirely responsible for the job. Elephants like to have one master just as dogs do, and are capable of a (considerable, considered, considerate) degree of personal affection. There are even stories of (half-trained, half-train, half-training) elephant calves who have refused to feed and pined to death when by some unavoidable circumstance they have been deprived of their own trainer. Such extreme cases must probably be taken with a grain of salt, but they do underline the general principle that the relationship between elephant and trainer is the key to successful training.
